Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI)
Supporting RMI with story-driven visual presentations that help complex research reach partners and the public.

The Challenge: Complexity Without Confusion
RMI produces rigorous climate research at the intersection of policy, markets, and technology. Their work is detailed by necessity — dense with data, nuance, and long-term implications.
The challenge wasn’t a lack of insight. It was how to present that insight clearly, responsibly, and persuasively across different audiences. Our role was to help translate complex research into visual and narrative formats that retain credibility while improving understanding.
A Story-First Approach to Research Presentation
Rather than treating research outputs as static deliverables, we approach them as stories — with structure, hierarchy, and intentional pacing.
Working closely with RMI’s team, we help shape presentations and visual materials that:
- Surface key insights without oversimplifying
- Guide audiences through data with clear narrative flow
- Balance technical accuracy with readability
Each engagement begins by understanding what the research needs to do — inform policy, influence markets, or clarify tradeoffs — and shaping the presentation accordingly.

Designing for Trust, Not Flash
Climate research demands restraint as much as creativity. Our work for RMI prioritizes clarity, consistency, and credibility over visual novelty.
Design choices are intentional:
- Visual systems that reinforce hierarchy and emphasis
- Charts and graphics that clarify relationships, not decorate them
- Layouts that support focus and comprehension
The goal is not to draw attention to the presentation — but to the insight itself.
Supporting Ongoing Research, Not One-Off Outputs
RMI’s work evolves continuously as new data emerges and priorities shift. Our role is to support that momentum — helping adapt research into formats that can be shared, updated, and reused across contexts. This project was led by MG Strategy + Design, in collaboration with M. Harris and Kern (MHK). Unrelated supports the partnership through technical execution and delivery, helping translate RMI’s research into clear, high-impact digital presentations.
By grounding our work in editorial thinking and visual discipline, we help RMI communicate with consistency over time — even as the substance of the work changes.
