Scroll & Float Motion: New Tools for Visual Storytelling

Example interface of scroll motion from an Onion post on Elon Musk's house.

We’re continuing to expand Amplify’s storytelling capabilities with our new Scroll and Float motion blocks, designed to create immersive, narrative driven experiences.

The Float motion block allows text to scroll over a full screen background image set to 100% of the browser window’s height. As each piece of text moves out of the viewport, the background image updates and a new moment in the story appears.

This creates a cinematic, chapter by chapter experience where visuals and copy work together to guide the reader through a narrative. A great example of this approach can be seen in Inside Elon Musk’s Texas Compound on The Onion.

Our Scroll motion blocks offer a different kind of storytelling. Editors can create a sequence of cards that stack, reveal, or transition as users scroll down the page. These interactions can live in a traditional vertical layout or shift into a horizontal scrolling experience, allowing for flexible and expressive layouts. The Onion’s June 2025 Best Sellers is a strong example of how this motion can be used to pace content and maintain momentum.

Originally built for The Onion, these motion blocks have since been adapted for use across other sites, including Dare2tri, where they help bring structure and energy to long form content.

Together, the Scroll and Float motion blocks give editors powerful new tools to move beyond static layouts and craft engaging visual stories that unfold naturally as users scroll.
